NewsMail Afternoon Edition Wed 02 Apr, 2014 Top Stories More Top Stories » Live: Five dead as magnitude 8.2 quake hits Chile, triggering tsunami At least five people are dead after a magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off Chile, generating a two-metre tsunami. The earthquake hit this morning at a depth of just 10 kilometres and was centred 86 kilometres north-west of Iquique in northern Chile. Interior minister Rodrigo Penalillo says the victims were four men and a woman who died in the cities of Iquique and Alto Hospicio, either of a heart attack or after being crushed by debris. The first waves struck Chile's northern coast within 45 minutes of the quake, with roads left gridlocked as Chileans abandoned their coastal homes for higher ground. Staff numbers at the refinery will be cut from 380 to 25 by 2015. Andy Holmes, president of BP Australasia, told a press conference in Melbourne that the refinery was being closed because the emergence of major export-based refineries in Asia operating on a lower cost base had "transformed the industry". "[It has] presented the Bulwer operation with an unsurmountable challenge," he said. The move follows Shell's February decision to sell its Australian refinery as well as 870 petrol stations to Vitol for $2.9 billion. The naked body of Sophie Collombet was found by a passer-by in a rotunda at Kurilpa Park near the William Jolly Bridge last Friday morning. The 21-year-old was formally identified yesterday, and police say she had suffered extensive head injuries in what they have described as a "brutal" attack. Detective Inspector Rod Kemp says it follows the death of other foreign students in Brisbane in recent months. "We are a safe society, I believe. But now this is the [fourth] international student [to be killed], and of course it's a concern to us," he said. "We're working around the clock to hopefully bring the person to justice." No economists were left red-faced following the bank's April board meeting, with all 33 economists surveyed by Bloomberg correctly forecasting the result.
