Bill Shorten confirms tilt for Labor leadership

Bill Shorten has confirmed his candidacy for the federal Labor leadership, declaring the party can win the next election.

He says the party cannot afford to "bide its time" in opposition and allow the incoming Coalition government to "tear down" Labor's accomplishments of the past six years.

"I want to lead the rebuilding of our movement and to take the fight up to the Coalition in Australian politics," he told reporters in Melbourne.

Mr Shorten, the former education minister, has indicated that if successful, his deputy would be Sydney-based MP Tanya Plibersek.

Prime Minister for Indigenous Affairs? Hardly

Aboriginal Australians awoke on Sunday morning to find they had a new "Prime Minister for Indigenous Affairs", a pledge Tony Abbott delivered during the 2013 election campaign.

One problem: no-one, including within the media, ever stopped to ask Aboriginal people if they actually wanted a "Prime Minister for Indigenous Affairs", and in particular whether or not they wanted Abbott.

As it turns out, they apparently don't.

Uni student petitions Coalition to scrap NBN plan

A 20-year-old Queensland university student is hoping to use the power of the internet to change the new Coalition Government's mind about the National Broadband Network.

An internet petition calling for the Coalition to scrap its plans to create a fibre-to-the-node network has had more than 110,000 signatures in just five days.

Twenty-year-old Liberal-voting student Nick Paine created the online petition in protest at the Liberal party's plans to switch to a $29.5 billion fibre-to-the-node model.

He wants the new government to continue rolling out a $44.1 billion fibre-to-the-premises network.
