| By Indonesia correspondent George Roberts, staff Incoming foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop says talks will be held with Indonesia after it said it would reject key parts of the Coalition's asylum seeker policy. Indonesian foreign minister Marty Natelegawa said yesterday that Tony Abbott's "policy about people smuggling" was a "problem" his country had to manage. He said Indonesia was against the Coalition's policy of buying back boats, as well as a plan for Australia to become involved in "early detection". Ms Bishop released a statement saying the Coalition would hold formal bilateral meetings on its boat policies in the coming weeks. "It is important Australia works closely with Indonesia to halt the people smuggling trade through their country," she said. More » |
