Abbott urges Labor to 'repent' ahead of release of carbon tax laws

Tony Abbott is ramping up the pressure on the Labor Party, releasing draft laws to axe the carbon tax with a warning to the Opposition to "repent" of its support for the measure.

An exposure draft of the legislation to repeal Labor's carbon pricing scheme will be released on the Federal Government's website at 4:00pm (AEDT).

"It is a bill designed to not only keep the Government's commitments, but to do the right thing by the people of Australia," the Prime Minister told a Canberra press conference today.

"If the Labor Party persists in saying, 'Yes, we support the carbon tax', they will effectively be saying 'No' to the people of Australia."

It's about muckraking, not kingmaking

Left intellectuals spent years obsessing over the wickedness of Australia's press corps, and how it was trying to secure government for Tony Abbott.

The expenses scandal demonstrates how off-target all that outrage about the media really was. It turns out the press is more interested in muckraking than kingmaking.

If the Coalition thought the press was on their side before the election, they no longer do now. Hopefully there's another lesson the Coalition will learn from this episode - there's no such thing as media management.

Minutes show Reserve Bank edging away from further rate cuts

The Reserve Bank has quietly edged further away from more rate cuts, with its latest communication concluding that it is "prudent" to stay on hold.

In the minutes from its October board meeting, the RBA says it should neither rule out further rate cuts, nor signal an imminent intention to cut further.

This position to keep open the option of further cuts is identical to that adopted by the board in September, but the language around the current level of rates has been subtly strengthened.
