Six Australians killed in Laos plane crash

Six Australians were among 49 people killed when a domestic passenger plane crashed into the Mekong River in Laos.

All 44 passengers and five crew died when the Lao Airlines flight plunged into the river as it tried to land at Pakse International Airport yesterday afternoon.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed six Australians were on board and said no survivors were expected.

"Australian consular officials are in contact with the families of those thought to be on the flight," DFAT said in a statement.
