Man dies after killing son at cricket ground

A man who killed his 11-year-old son at a cricket ground south-east of Melbourne yesterday, has died in hospital after being shot by police at the scene.

Homicide detectives have spoken to several children who saw the boy die and police shoot his father.

Officers opened fired on the man, shooting him in the chest, after he threatened them with a knife at the Tyabb cricket oval.

The man, in his 50s, was flown to Melbourne's Alfred Hospital, where he died overnight.

The man's son was found dead in the park with significant head injuries, but police would not say how the boy was killed.

Slogans stifled debate - and we let them

The two sides of politics revealed as little as they could about how they would address the big issues before the last election, and instead favoured clichés and slogans.

The call comes as the Abbott Government fends off criticism over its handling of calls for assistance from fruit processor SPC Ardmona and the end of Australia's car manufacturing sector.

In a speech on Wednesday night Mr Joyce said Qantas's role as national carrier was one it wanted to "continue playing for many decades to come".

"But to do so, we have to change - and so does government policy."
