Labor's Terri Butler wins Griffith by-election

Labor has retained former prime minister Kevin Rudd's old seat of Griffith, with voters electing candidate Terri Butler despite a swing away from the ALP.

It is the second time in five months that residents of Griffith - an electorate covering inner-city suburbs on Brisbane's southside - have gone to the ballot box.

Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) figures are showing a swing toward the LNP candidate Bill Glasson, but Ms Butler is ahead after preferences, 53.3 per cent to 46.7 per cent.

The former industrial lawyer addressed a crowd of supporters in South Brisbane, thanking campaign workers, volunteers, and her predecessor, Mr Rudd.

"I'm really proud to be part of this Labor team ... I'm proud of the message that we sent to (Prime Minister) Tony Abbott and (Queensland Premier) Campbell Newman today," she said.

The alleged communist Ian Macdonald betrayed

Being an alleged closet Communist was, oddly, not the most significant point to be made about Arthur Gietzelt, who died last month.

The former senior Labor politician was patron of Ian Macdonald, whose baleful influence on NSW Labor politic culminated in its present sorry state.

Macdonald may seem like a convenient scapegoat for the problems of NSW Labor. But the divisions he played a large part in fostering meant the Left was in a weaker position to oppose the rising influence of figures such as Eddie Obeid.

Inflation fears trigger the Reserve Bank’s move away from further rate cuts

A steep rise in the Reserve Bank's inflation forecasts to above its target range is the clear reason its board shifted decisively away from further rate cuts at Tuesday's meeting.

The change in the RBA's expectations come in response to a surprise lift in the official December quarter inflation numbers released a fortnight ago.

The RBA cites the fall in the Australian dollar as one factor driving consumer prices higher at an uncomfortably fast pace.
