Browsing history not targeted under data retention laws: Abbott

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has sought to allay concerns about the impact of new security laws on privacy.

The Government yesterday announced it would draft legislation to compel telephone and internet companies to keep metadata - the information on customers' calls and internet use - for security agencies to access.

This morning the PM said authorities would be able to see what internet sites people were viewing.

But later he said the metadata to be collected would not include people's browsing history.

He used a metaphor to explain that "metadata is the material on the front of the envelope and the contents of the letter will remain private".
