Love, marriage and running the country Julia Gillard is the Prime Minister. She earns more than $300,000 a year and she runs the country. She is nearly 50 years old. She can't cook, sure. But she can scramble a jet, and get Glenn Stevens out of bed in the middle of the night. Surely she has earned the right not to endure infantilising questions about whether she really loves her boyfriend. Political purpose forgotten, direction lost If you are an idealist in search of a cause, formal politics are a very bleak alternative to what is available outside. Minimum grog price needed now The Government's action on alcohol in the NT is welcome but only a minimum price can achieve the circuit-breaking change that is needed. Inhumane detention While media reports focus on the treatment of refugees in Malaysia, a concern for human rights is also absent from the Government's mandatory detention policy. The darknet ages At the recent e-G8 summit, French president Nicolas Sarkozy called for a world where states worked together to tame the internet. But states have profited from the spread of networks - it is both disingenuous to decry their reach and impossible to try to contain their power. Instead, we now see the rise of 'parallel powers'; extraterritorial, not subject to the state. In a previous era they would have looked like the Mafia; today, they look more like eBay. |
