Pyne insists university deregulation will force fees down

Federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne insists competition between universities will force student fees down under the Government's shake-up of the sector.

In an email sent to staff, University of Melbourne's vice-chancellor said fees may have to rise as much as 61 per cent and that students would get "nothing new for this increased debt".

But Mr Pyne told Insiders universities who hit students with excessive fees would be priced out of the market.

The next pawn in the Eastern Europe chess game

What has brought about this change in Putin's calculations? Sanctions? The German-brokered negotiations? A quiet word from China's Xi Jinping? Or is this just a judo-style feint?

Outside the walls of the Kremlin, no one knows. Besides, it's increasingly clear that Russia has other fish to fry.

Russia will probably make its next move in this elaborate dance for control of Europe's borderlands not in the industrial cities of Ukraine's east, but in a statelet known (to those who know of it) as Transnistria.
