Dozens of agencies to fall under federal budget axe

The Abbott Government says it will save nearly $500 million in tomorrow's budget by taking an axe to Commonwealth agencies.

A further 36 government bodies will be abolished on top of the 40 already slated for closure.

Parts of seven national, cultural institutions will be merged while the Royal Australian Mint and Defence Housing Australia could be privatised, as the Coalition moves to reduce the size of government.

Combined with cuts and closures, thousands of public servants will lose their jobs.

Abbott has nowhere left to hide on education

While the Gonski package passed by the last Parliament was a historic six-year education funding agreement, it now appears the "unity ticket" from the LNP only ran for four years.

If the Budget doesn't reflect the Coalition's promised bipartisanship, I expect a lot of Australians will be loudly reminding Abbott and Pyne of good policy and bad promises.

A breach of faith on education could very well be the straw that breaks the camel's back, and bring many to the point of protest - students, teachers and parents.

ABS employee made $60k from $7m insider trading scam, court hears

A 24-year-old Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) employee has been extradited to Victoria to face charges over an alleged $7 million insider trading scam.

Christopher Russell Hill is accused of sharing unpublished ABS data with friend Lukas Kamay, an NAB employee in Melbourne, to predict movements in the Australian dollar.

The charges laid by ASIC and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) include insider trading, money laundering and abuse of public office.
