Obama warns Russia over possible military intervention in Ukraine

United States president Barack Obama has issued a warning to Russia that "there will be costs" for any military intervention in neighbouring Ukraine.

Acting Ukrainian president Oleksander Turchinov has accused Russia of deploying troops to Crimea in an attempt to provoke conflict and urged Russian president Vladimir Putin to stop "provocations".

The comments follow the new interim government's claims Russian forces staged an "armed invasion" in the Crimea region, blocking a military air base and entering an airport on the Black Sea peninsula.

Mr Obama told reporters in Washington he was "deeply concerned" by reports of Russian military movements inside Ukraine.

"The United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine," he said.

Conflict of interest claims get lost in the noise

The sickening events on Manus Island were never going to be adequately prosecuted by the Opposition considering its own role in that policy.

But Stephen Conroy's inopportune stoush with the military did sink Labor's opportunity to further pursue Assistant Health Minister Fiona Nash over conflict of interest allegations.

The Minister now accepts she knew all about the links her chief of staff had with the junk food industry. Yet she told the Senate on February 11 that there were no links. That contradiction still hasn't been explained.

Virgin deep in the red as Qantas battle bleeds both airlines

The capacity war that is wounding Qantas is also bleeding its other protagonist Virgin Australia.

The airline posted an $84 million loss to match its rival's $235 million loss yesterday.

Virgin Australia boss John Borghetti has, like his counterpart at Qantas, blamed the loss mainly on a capacity war being waged by both airlines against each other.

Analysts say, unless there is a circuit breaker, the battle will continued until one airline is forced to flinch under the pinch of falling fares, empty planes and rising costs.

Tensions rise in Crimea as Ukraine's Yanukovych vows to fight on

Ukraine's ousted president Viktor Yanukovych says he was forced to flee to Russia due to threats to his safety, as tensions in Ukraine grow following an apparent takeover of an airport by Russian forces.

Mr Yanukovych told a press conference in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don late on Friday that he had "not been overthrown" and vowed to continue to fight for the future of the country.

"I was forced to leave the Ukraine under the immediate threat to my life and the life of my family," he said.

The comments, made in his first public appearance since he was ousted as president, came as Ukraine's interior minister accused Russian forces of staging an "armed invasion", claiming they entered an airport on the Black Sea peninsula.

Arsen Avakov said there had been no bloodshed when armed men, whom he described as Russian naval forces, took over a military airport near Sevastopol, where the Russian Black Sea fleet has a base.
