Doubts raised over details of death on Manus Island

The Federal Government says it has received more information suggesting that the violence that led to the death of an asylum seeker happened inside the perimeter of the Manus Island detention centre.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says new information casts doubt on initial reports that 23-year-old Reza Berati died from injuries he sustained outside the centre.

In a statement, Mr Morrison says he is unsure where Mr Berati suffered his fatal injury on Monday night and who was responsible.

Mr Morrison says further reports indicate the majority of the unrest, and attempts to restore order, took place within the centre.

Greens immigration spokeswoman Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says the Government is in cover-up mode and her party will be pushing for an inquiry.

The tragic death, the dozens of injuries sustained and conflicting accounts make the need for an independent inquiry imperative.

Treasurer Hockey makes case for tough reform decisions at G20 summit

As the G20 summit enters its second full day, Treasurer Joe Hockey has been making the case for tough decisions that could come as part of the Federal Government's reform agenda.

Mr Hockey is using the G20 meetings as a platform to talk up issues such as the ageing population, stimulating growth, cutting unemployment, reducing red tape and encouraging infrastructure spending in a post-financial crisis world.

"There is a general mood of intention to deliver real outcomes," the Treasurer said.
