Deadly clashes break truce at Kiev protest site

As many as 25 people have been killed in fresh clashes between protesters and riot police in Ukraine's capital Kiev, shattering an hours-old truce.

The violence erupted on Thursday after protesters hurled petrol bombs and paving stones to drive riot police out of Independence Square, the main protest site.

Ukrainian authorities say at least 67 people have been killed this week, including 28 people on Wednesday, marking the bloodiest few days of Ukraine's 22-year post-Soviet history.

Television footage shows activists in combat fatigues leading several captured, uniformed policemen across the square.

It is believed around 50 police officers have been cornered or are being held by protesters around the square.

The EU has announced it will apply targeted sanctions "as a matter of urgency" after foreign ministers met with Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.

WA distraction to test Coalition numbers

The fresh Senate election is a distraction the Abbott Government could do without, as electorally it can only hold its ground or lose a seat.

But it does offer Tony Abbott a last chance to attack Labor over the carbon tax before he has to find new ammunition.

And while the Senate numbers may vary, the Liberals face the real prospect of state election wins and wall-to-wall Coalition governments.

Dollar slides as China manufacturing index hits seven-month low

The Australian dollar has lost around half a cent after a Chinese manufacturing index hit a seven-month low.

HSBC's flash China manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) fell 1.2 points to 48.3 in February, and now sits easily below the 50-point level that would indicate improvement in the sector.

The result also missed analyst forecasts in a Bloomberg survey which centred on the flash PMI remaining at 49.5.

However, some analysts warn that more data is needed to establish whether China's economy is slowing rapidly, given the effect of the recent Lunar New Year national holiday.
