Armed locals let into Manus Island detention centre: witness

A witness to violence at the Manus Island detention centre last Monday night says guards from the security firm G4S allowed locals armed with makeshift weapons into the facility.

The Federal Government has backed away from its initial claims about what happened during the violence at its off-shore detention centre that killed one detainee and left dozens more injured.

A large crowd of local residents had also gathered to watch a stand-off that continued for several hours.

The witness says asylum seekers were taunting local staff with highly offensive insults and G4S guards asked the locals to come inside the centre.

The momentum of events

Australians are being well-served by the ADF, and it's unlikely that its relationship with the Indonesian military will suffer unduly for the moment as a result of its recent naval incursions.

But a little cautionary history is in order. It's salutary to recall how quickly in 1914 an accumulation of 'events' rendered friendships and common sense irrelevant.

Plainly, the Indonesian archipelago in 2014 is not Europe in 1914. At the same time, it would be helpful if we could try not to subject our most important neighbour to too many more events for a while.

Lifting global growth by 2 percentage points from its current forecast levels over five years would add $2 trillion to global economic output.

G20 members have agreed to take 'concrete steps' to make it happen - with policies to improve investment and to enhance trade.

However, analysts and commentators are sceptical that the target will be met as finance ministers return home and confront domestic political realities.
