No intention to send combat troops to Iraq: PM

Tony Abbott says Australia has "no intention" of sending combat troops to Iraq, as RAAF planes prepare to fly arms and ammunition to Kurdish forces battling Islamic State militants in the north of the country.

In a statement to Parliament the Prime Minister called Islamic State a "death cult" and confirmed arms shipments to Kurdish Peshmerga fighters would begin "in coming days".

He was speaking after Shiite militias and Iraqi government forces backed by US air power beat back Islamic State fighters who had been threatening a massacre in a key Shiite town.

Contradictory interests bedevil US strategy

America has called for a global coalition to fight the Islamic State and it comes as no surprise that NATO allies and, of course, Australia, are singing up.

But to defeat the Islamic State, the US will need to overcome not only its own split strategic thinking in the region, but also secure the support of Sunnis - both within Iraq and Syria, and in governments across the Middle East.

Without their cooperation the long-term prospects for destroying the Islamic State and securing regional peace become quite bleak.

Feared massacre averted as Iraqi troops, militia break Amerli siege

Iraqi troops and Shiite militiamen have broken through to end a siege by Islamic State militants on a Shiite town, a day after Australian forces dropped supplies in the area.

The town of Amerli had been surrounded by militants for more than two months, leaving as many as 15,000 Shiite Turkmen trapped and suffering a shortage of food and water.

"Security forces and militia fighters are inside Amerli now after breaking the siege and that will definitely relieve the suffering of residents," the town's mayor said.

We must heed Kissinger's prophecy

With Russian troops now in Ukraine, we need to be thinking more about history and what it can teach us, not less.

The logic of former US secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, suggests that instead of promoting a return to equilibrium, NATO's latest moves will merely confirm its nefarious purposes in Russian eyes.

This would be a notably short-sighted way to handle foreign relations.
