China says Palmer's mongrel remarks were 'doomed to failure'

China's ambassador to Australia has confirmed he has received a letter of apology from Clive Palmer, adding that the Chinese people are "never to be insulted".

The Federal MP last week described the Chinese government as "mongrels" that "shoot their own people" triggering widespread condemnation from figures including Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

This morning Mr Palmer offered a "genuine and sincere" apology after realising "that what I said on Q&A was an insult to Chinese people everywhere".

A statement released by the Chinese Embassy in response to Mr Palmer's letter said the remarks were always "doomed to failure".
