Australia drops aid to Iraqis under siege by Islamic State fighters

A Royal Australian Air Force plane has dropped humanitarian aid into the besieged Shiite town of Amerli in northern Iraq ahead of delivering weapons to fighters battling Islamic State (IS) militants.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says Australia has joined other nations in making air drops of humanitarian aid, after earlier announcingĂ‚ RAAF aircraft based in Dubai will fly munitions and arms into Iraq to fight IS.

Despite Australia's expanded role in assisting Iraqi and Kurdish forces combat the IS threat, Mr Abbott said there had been "no specific request" for Australia to play a military role in the fight against IS forces.
