PM draws Indigenous ire by naming settlement as 'defining moment'

Indigenous figures including the chair of the Prime Minister's Indigenous Advisory Council are furious that Tony Abbott has highlighted white settlement as the defining moment in Australian history.

While launching a project on the 100 moments that defined Australia yesterday, Mr Abbott said the arrival of the First Fleet "was the defining moment in the history of this continent".

His remarks about drew swift condemnation from Warren Mundine, who said it was a "disastrous defining moment", while other Indigenous groups labelled the comments ridiculous and said Mr Abbott was "not speaking for all Australians".
