In a statement to Parliament the Prime Minister called Islamic State a "death cult" and confirmed arms shipments to Kurdish Peshmerga fighters would begin "in coming days". He was speaking after Shiite militias and Iraqi government forces backed by US air power beat back Islamic State fighters who had been threatening a massacre in a key Shiite town. But to defeat the Islamic State, the US will need to overcome not only its own split strategic thinking in the region, but also secure the support of Sunnis - both within Iraq and Syria, and in governments across the Middle East.
