Mourners honour slain Missouri teen with calls for peace, justice

Michael Brown, the black teenager shot and killed by a police officer, has been farewelled by family and friends at a rousing funeral in Ferguson, Missouri.

The baseball cap Brown was wearing when he was shot rested on top of the 18-year-old's casket as thousands of mourners filled the church.

The service in St Louis was a markedly different scene from the violent protests that have rocked the suburb of Ferguson after the shooting on August 9.

"Michael Brown does not want to be remembered for riots. He wants to be remembered as the one that made America deal with how we're going to police in the United States," said Reverend Al Sharpton.

Don't dismiss Middle East intervention

The response to Tony Abbott's modest expression of support for action in Iraq tells us much about our current national mood.

And in the rush to learn the lessons of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars we may end up making the mistake of indifference and inaction.

When the time comes for the world to confront the sources of disorder in the Middle East, Australia's response should be to see what we can do to lend a hand.

PM details funding to fight home-grown terrorism

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says $64 million has been allocated to supporting community groups and security agencies to reduce the threat of home-grown terrorism.

Speaking in Melbourne, Mr Abbott said there were at least 60 Australians fighting with the Islamic State (IS) in northern Iraq and eastern Syria and about 100 Australians working to support the movement.

"Because of the Australians who are involved with this movement, what might otherwise be a problem in a far away country is a problem for us," he said.

The funding is part of the $630 million in additional funding announced for the country's security agencies last month.

$1 billion budget black hole tipped as WA's credit rating downgraded

Low iron ore prices will likely blow a $1 billion hole in the Western Australian budget, the state's Treasurer has revealed.

The news came just hours after it emerged the state had suffered another downgrade of its credit rating due to spiralling debt.

Iron ore is sitting at about US$90 a tonne, more than $30 less than what state Treasury used to calculate expected revenue for this financial year.

WA Treasurer Mike Nahan said he did not expect the price would climb back above US$100 a tonne, which would lead to a $1 billion difference in this year's budget.

His revelation came on the same day credit rating agency Moody's followed Standard and Poor's decision to strip WA of its AAA rating, pushing it down to Aa1.
