Thousands of Palestinians have taken to the streets in Gaza to celebrate the open-ended agreement which brings an end to the bloody seven-week conflict. Egyptian officials said the deal called for an indefinite halt to hostilities, the immediate opening of Gaza's blockaded crossings with Israel and Egypt, and a widening of the territory's fishing zone in the Mediterranean. Under a second stage of the truce, Israel and the Palestinians would discuss the construction of a Gaza sea port and Israel's release of Hamas prisoners in the occupied West Bank. The truth is the budget was never in such a state that massive cuts needed to occur now. What was always the issue was the structural deficit that would become an issue later on. But luckily for Joe Hockey there is still time to frame the discussion around the medium to long-term rather than the present "emergency" rhetoric that's been used.
