Coalition never promised to keep Gonski: Abbott

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the Coalition will honour election promises it has made, not those voters "thought" it was making.

Mr Abbott said the Coalition was on a "unity ticket" with Labor on the issue of school funding in the lead-up to September's federal election.

But Education Minister Christopher Pyne has pledged to renegotiate all school funding deals made by the former government after next year.

Mr Abbott maintains the Government is upholding its election commitment.

"We will keep the promise that we made. It's not the promise that some people thought we made, or that some people might have liked us to make," he said.

Russia must respect the law of the sea

The overnight decision by a Russian court to grant bail to Australian Greenpeace member Colin Russell is a welcome development, but the Arctic Sunrise controversy continues.

Russell and his fellow protesters are being barred from leaving Russia, in direct conflict with a recent ruling from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

This saga represents a test for post-Soviet Russia and its compliance with international law, one that can only be passed by completely freeing the protesters involved.

Business Council hits out at decision to block Graincorp takeover

The Business Council of Australia has warned the Federal Government's decision to reject ADM's proposed takeover of GrainCorp takeover could put at risk critical foreign investment in the future.

Treasurer Joe Hockey on Friday announced the decision to reject Archer Daniels Midland's $3.4 billion bid for the eastern grain handle, saying he had to take the national interest into account.

But the BCA has hit out at Mr Hockey's decision, suggesting it undermines the Government's message that Australia is "open for business".

Eight dead, 14 seriously injured after helicopter crashes into pub

Eight people were killed and 14 seriously injured when a helicopter crashed into the roof of a crowded Glasgow pub.

The police chopper smashed into The Clutha pub on Friday night ahead of St Andrew's Day, which celebrates Scotland's patron saint.

About 120 patrons had gathered inside the pub to listen to live music.

Police say two officers and the civilian pilot aboard the chopper were killed, along with five people inside the venue.

They have not yet named any of those killed and are warning Scots to brace themselves for a rising death toll.

Rejection of GrainCorp takeover by ADM 'weak', Opposition says

The Federal Opposition has labelled the Government's decision to reject the sale of GrainCorp to American agribusiness Archer Daniels Midland as "weak" and "pathetic".

Announcing the decision this morning to reject ADM's $3.4 billion bid for the eastern grain handler, Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey said he had to take into account the national interest.

"I consider that now is not the right time for a 100 per cent foreign acquisition of this key Australian business," he said, adding that it "could risk undermining public support for the foreign investment regime and ongoing foreign investment more generally".

The proposed sale of GrainCorp had represented an early test of unity for the new Coalition Government, being strongly opposed by grower groups, the National Party and some country Liberal MPs in the eastern states.

Opposition treasury spokesman Chris Bowen said Mr Hockey had failed his first big credibility test as Treasurer, and suggested he had been "bullied" by his Coalition partners and Cabinet colleagues into rejecting ADM's bid, with profound consequences.
