Pyne to face hostile states after axing Gonski

Education Minister Christopher Pyne will face off against some angry state counterparts today in the wake of his decision to dump Labor's Gonski school funding model.

Mr Pyne created a political storm earlier this week when he announced that the Government will honour funding for 2014 but beyond that, new deals will be negotiated.

He says he expects a "warm reception" at the meeting in Sydney, and will ask his counterparts to work with him to "do the best thing possible for students".

But Mr Pyne may be heading for a showdown with New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia over the issue.

They are fuming over his move, and all insist that agreements for funding over the next six years were signed off under the previous government and must be honoured.

"This will be the biggest betrayal ever of children around this nation if this Federal Liberal Government turns their back on the Gonski deals that have been signed," SA Education Minister Jennifer Rankine said.

The Drum

The electorate doesn't have buyer's remorse. Yet.

The Prime Minister said the Coalition and Labor were "on a unity ticket" on education funding, and said he would restore public trust by delivering on his promises.

Perhaps the Abbott Government has misread the election result and believes it has some goodwill to spend. It hasn't.

The 2013 election was first and foremost a repudiation of a divided and chaotic government, not an embrace of an opposition with fresh ideas.

Joyce says Qantas ownership rule changes 'not realistically achievable'

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has welcomed renewed debate about international investment in the airline, but does not expect any changes to foreign ownership rules in parliament.

It comes after Treasurer Joe Hockey canvassed the idea of ditching ownership restrictions and even providing the national carrier with Government aid.

Mr Hockey has criticised the Qantas Sale Act, which says the airline must be at least 51 per cent Australian-owned.

In a letter to Qantas staff, Mr Joyce says the comments show the Federal Government acknowledges there is no longer a "level playing field" in the industry.
