  • Almandin has narrowly won the Melbourne Cup ahead of Heartbreak City. It's the fifth win for owner Lloyd Williams and the second win for jockey Kerrin McEvoy. The race favourite Hartnell came third

  • The Reserve Bank has left interest rates on hold at a record low 1.5 per cent for the third straight month. New governor Philip Lowe said in a statement afterwards that house prices had been "rising briskly" in some markets

  • Family First senator Bob Day has tendered his resignation, effective immediately. Pressure had been mounting on him to resign as his construction company Home Australia went into liquidation

  • 10:00am AEDT: Michael Atkins is expected to continue to give evidence at the inquest into the death of his boyfriend, Matthew Leveson, in 2007. Atkins has previously been acquitted of murder

  • 11:00am AEDT: Omar Succarieh is due to be sentenced in Brisbane after pleading guilty to four foreign incursion charges
