ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • Anglican Church leaders have accused the Sydney Archbishop of silencing same-sex marriage supporters within his church. The leaders argue the global Anglican view was to accept that Anglicans could disagree on marriage equality

  • Former prime minister Julia Gillard has warned women going into politics to expect rape threats. Ms Gillard issued the warning while speaking in London at an address in memory of Jo Cox, the UK MP who died after being shot

  • All beaches in Ballina Shire have been closed for 24 hours after a man received minor injuries in a shark attack. A 17-year-old surfer was mauled by a great white at the same beach two weeks ago

Scientists have accidentally stumbled upon a way to slow the brain's aging process. A team from the University of Queensland used ultrasounds to slow the aging process in the brains of laboratory mice.

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 7:00PM AEDT: The ACT leaders debate will be held at the National Press Club

  • 8:00pm AEDT: The Australian Diamonds will play the New Zealand Silver Ferns in the 2nd Test of the Constellation Cup
