ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • Malcolm Turnbull has refused to say if he will allow a parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage. Labor announced it will block the legislation to establish a plebiscite on the issue, meaning it will not pass through the Senate

  • New South Wales Premier Mike Baird has ditched his government's ban on greyhound racing. The ban will be replaced with a new policy that will mean fewer races, fewer tracks and tough animal welfare measures

  • BP has announced it won't continue with plans for exploration drilling in the Great Australian Bight. The South Australian Government says Australians should feel disappointed by the decision, while environmentalists say the move is a win for the community

A Melbourne man has discovered a way to melt potatoes. He then creates a range of food substitutes like cheese, ice cream and custard made of 96 per cent potato.

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 6:00pm AEDT: Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce will appear on RN Drive

  • 8:00pm AEDT: Australia takes on Japan in a World Cup soccer qualifier in Melbourne
