Your weekly update from the US campaign trail

USA Votes 2016
Mud slinging, polls and Ken Bone
Just three and a bit weeks from the Presidential election, how low can it go?

Over the last week the national conversation has swung from Donald Trump's toxic comments about using his fame to sexually dominate women, to the numerous sexual assault allegations from women against Bill Clinton, to Hillary enabling Bill's cheating behaviour and then back to allegations that Donald Trump touched women inappropriately.

It should be said that he vehemently denies the allegations and the various accusations against Bill Clinton have not been prosecuted.

But no one's letting that stop them slinging mud as the campaigning hits fever pitch.

As well as the allegations of intimidation to hide Bill's behaviour, Hillary Clinton is also facing new pressure over Wikileaks revealing a series of email conversations between her campaign staff.

Apart from showing that she employs some double language in relation to her policies depending on her audience they also show concern within her campaign that the deep trust issues about her within the electorate may prevent her from winning.

(And, importantly, give away campaign Chairman John Podesta's secrets for making risotto).

Meanwhile the Republican Party has begun to eat itself with powerful House Speaker Paul Ryan saying he'll no longer defend or campaign for Mr Trump.

That's creating all sorts of internal havoc as Trump loyalists accuse those deserting the campaign of disloyalty while those bailing out say they can't, in good conscience, back Mr Trump anymore even though the exodus is trashing his chances of getting elected.

And then there are the polls.

Using a four way split which includes the Green and Libertarian candidates Hillary is up as much as 11 points.

If we revert to the polling average she's up around 6 which is outside the margin of error.

The battleground states are fascinating with several traditionally red states now in play for the Democrats.

Take a look at these poll numbers for Utah by the way.

It's been Republican since 1964.

Here's our recent interview with the so-called spoiler Evan McMullin if you're interested in what he's about.

HE SAID

"If we don't win this election, I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't know" - Donald Trump speaking to supporters at a rally in Ocala

SHE SAID

"It makes you want to unplug the internet and just look at cat GIFs" - Hillary Clinton on Thursday when discussing allegations against Donald Trump.

WHERE'S BERNIE

He continues to do the rounds for Hillary – this week up in Maine.

However, he also tweeted that Election Day should be a public holiday – which is not only a good idea but probably a vote winner – you should've brought that one up sooner, Bern!

BY THE NUMBERS

65 seconds – that's how much more Donald Trump spoke during Sunday's second presidential debate.

In total, Trump spoke for 40 minutes and 10 seconds, according to CNN.

On the other hand, Hillary spoke for 39 minutes and five seconds.

THE WEEK OF THE GOLDEN GIFS AND VIDS

Could there be any better fodder?

Here's two of our favourites from the last 2 debates.

SLEIGHT OF HAND

There was no customary handshake before Sunday night's debate, which sent everybody into a spin.

The funny stuff continued after the debate inside the Trump camp when, Don Jr. missed out on a high-five from dad and Tiffany feigned away from a kiss - maybe.

Awkward!

GARY'S GOT MAIL

Remember the various Gary Johnson gaffes that we've been following that started with his seeming blind ignorance about what or where Aleppo is?

He's not the only one it seems.

Check out this list of search terms during the second debate.

#facepalm

We'll pay this response.

TALE OF TWO TRUMPS

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich explained the Republican nominee to Fox Business like this:

"Look, first of all, let me just say about Trump, who I admire and I've tried to help as much as I can. There's a big Trump and a little Trump. The little Trump is frankly pathetic. I mean, he's mad over not getting a phone call?"

ASK TRUMP

Donald Trump says he'll Make America Great Again but this Zoltar machine "All-Seeing Trump" in New York City makes you wonder, "How Great America's Future Is".

BABY TRUMP

Meet mini-Trump: a youngster who Donald Trump invited up on stage during a rally in Pennsylvania on Monday night.

Decked out in a matching suit with a red tie and "Vote" button to match, Trump said, "Now, he's supposed to look like Donald Trump but he's much too good looking".

When he asked the kid if he wanted to go back to his parents or stay with Mr Trump, he said "Trump!".

Check it out.

IT'S VOTE TIME!

The election isn't until November 8 but voting is underway in a bunch of states across America including Ohio, where Hillary Clinton's campaign put on a show on Wednesday.

And that's November 8 – not 28 – like Mr Trump suggested at a rally earlier this week. Oops.

WAY BACK WHEN

A new feature on the Hillary Clinton website allows people to compare the two candidates and their records at any point in history.

It's fun – and very pro-Hillary.

NEVER GIVE UP

Spotted in Missouri on Monday. A massive yard sign for Ted Cruz:

KEN BONE

In a pretty dire presidential debate, one man with a red cable-knit sweater stole the show.

Ken Bone asked the candidates about energy policy but his presence in the town hall transcended the question – inspiring an internet meme, a flurry of intrigue, a Halloween costume, and ultimately a new brand.

Who won the second presidential debate you ask?

Ken Bone did.

Debate number three will be held amid the bright lights of Las Vegas mid next week.

It's a case of what could possibly happen next, but then it is 2016!

Talk to you next week from the Silver State.
