ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • Police say it was "almost a miracle" that two children survived Queensland's worst theme park tragedy at Dreamworld. CCTV footage is being used to determine how the incident happened, and the rafts from the ride have been taken for forensic examination

  • Australia's most senior Catholic cleric, Cardinal George Pell, has been voluntarily interviewed by Victoria Police detectives in Rome over historic child abuse allegations

  • The Coalition's plan to tighten access to paid parental leave is unlikely to start in January next year. The Government needs the votes of senator Nick Xenophon's party, but he said he would not support the scheme if the current start date remained in place

An Australian cleaner has won the world's richest portraiture prize, worth $150,000. Megan Sere's painting of her daughter Scarlett depicted as a colonial girl took out the The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize.

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 7:30pm AEDT: Defence Minister Marise Payne will be a guest on 7.30

  • 9:00pm AEDT: Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will attend Jakarta Fashion Week in Indonesia
