More cuts needed to pay for defence, security spending: Hockey

Joe Hockey has signalled more budget cuts are on the way, saying the Government has "no choice" but to look for new savings.

The move has been prompted by the failure to win Senate support for billions of dollars of budget measures and new spending on security and the defence mission in the Middle East.

In August, the Government announced a $630 million funding boost for security and intelligence agencies to better deal with the threat of terrorism.

The military deployment to the Middle East is expected to cost about $500 million per year.

It's time to cry for Argentina

Go back a century and Australia and Argentina - with vast expanses abundant in beef, grains and natural resources - were youthful southern hemisphere twins cavorting among the global Top 10 economies.

Yet our economies have sharply diverged. While Australia is still ranked globally at 6 based on GDP per capita, our South American twin has cut herself loose, slumping to 47.

In Australia, we like to grumble about escalating property prices, but Argentines would relish that luxury. For them, property prices are falling and inflation is rocketing.

Dollar drops on weak retail sales growth

A steep fall in sales for department stores and household goods retailers has kept turnover fairly flat in August.

Overall, the Bureau of Statistics figures show retail turnover edged up 0.1 per cent in the last month of winter to $23.3 billion.

However, economist forecasts had centred on a rise of 0.4 per cent for the month, and the Australian dollar was quickly sold off on the data.

Legal challenge warning over senate inquiry into Queensland Government

There could be a legal challenge to the wide-ranging senate committee established into the Queensland Government if senators try to compel Premier Campbell Newman or any other politicians to give evidence, a leading constitutional law expert says.

The Palmer United Party, Labor and the Greens have combined to set up the six-month select committee into Queensland Government administration.

The inquiry has broad terms of reference to look into into the use of Commonwealth funds, the administration of the courts and judicial system, and development and environmental approvals, including for coal seam gas projects.

From fad to fab: Stevens rethinks regulations

RBA boss Glenn Stevens once described macroprudential tools as a "fad", but as interest rates stay low and the housing bubble looms suddenly they don't seem so crazy.

Tomorrow he will front a special Senate hearing to discuss imposing these tougher lending rules on banks.

It's likely he will argue about the need to do something about housing prices and speculative borrowing that doesn't involve raising interest rates.

Over 2 million Australians risk defaulting on basic debts, report warns

More than two million Australians risk defaulting on their basic household debts over the next year, a report out today warns.

According to an annual scorecard from the credit reference agency Veda, the bills in the too-hard basket include small ones for gas, electricity and mobile phones.

The study also says 500,000 people have jeopardised their credit-worthiness by lying or intentionally omitting information from their credit applications.

CSIRO's $120m Investigator can't plug into shore power

The CSIRO's new research vessel Investigator is unable to access shore power in Hobart and is running off the ship's engines.

The ship has been moved from its berth alongside the CSIRO to Macquarie Wharf following complaints by neighbours about the noise.

It is the latest in a string of issues with the $120-million flagship vessel, which was besieged by delays before eventually arriving at its home port of Hobart earlier this month, a year later than expected.
