Ebola crisis 'spiralling out of control', US to send troops to West Africa

The US will send 3,000 troops to West Africa to try to halt the spread of the deadly Ebola virus, warning the epidemic in West Africa is "spiralling out of control".

The move came as the World Health Organisation said it was establishing a global response coalition to respond to the crisis.

"Here's the hard truth ... Ebola is now an epidemic, the likes that we have not seen before. It's spiralling out of control, it's getting worse," president Barack Obama said.

Sinking feeling: saving money, losing support

On every indicator apart from international relations, the Coalition is in net negative territory.

Even on traditional brand strengths like managing the economy and supporting Australian business, the Coalition is floundering - and the position has declined markedly over the past six months.

Rethinking the offshoring of our defence manufacturing capability and approaching it as more than a simple Dutch auction could be a defining first step in re-engaging a cynical public.

Australian MP flags tougher foreign buyer rules

The Liberal chair of a parliamentary committee has flagged tougher enforcement of rules limiting foreign real estate investment, as the Treasurer welcomed overseas buyers of new dwellings.

Kelly O'Dwyer says there has been a "failure of leadership" in the Foreign Investment Review Board that has allowed overseas buyers to skirt a prohibition on buying existing properties.

At the same time, both she and the Treasurer Joe Hockey say foreign buyers have an important role to play in funding the development of new dwellings.

Mr Hockey argues it is "lazy analysis" to say Australia has a housing bubble, as it is a lack of new home supply driving up prices.

Sea level rises will cost Australia billions: report

Future sea level rises could put more than $200 billion of Australian infrastructure at risk, a report by the Climate Council has found.

The report showed sea levels were likely to rise by between 40 centimetres and one metre over the next century, with the gravest estimates creating an "impossible situation" for coastal communities.

"If you look at some of our most vulnerable areas, and the Sydney region is one of those, you would say toward the end of this century that a one-in-100-year flood is going to be happening every few days," he said.
