US launches more strikes in Syria with partners' help

The United States says it has carried out 10 more air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq with the help of coalition partners.

The strikes hit seven targets in Syria, including an IS building and two armed vehicles at the border crossing in the besieged Kurdish town of Ain al-Arab, also known as Kobane, US Central Command said.

In Iraq, three air strikes were conducted south-west of Erbil, destroying four armed vehicles and a fighting position.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, meanwhile, has returned to Australia for Cabinet talks that could see Australian forces join the war against IS militants in Iraq.

Cambodia deal: another stain on our reputation

This is just the most recent chapter in the history of foreign policy misadventure that has occurred as a result of Australia's narrow approach to border security.

Australia's domestic interests, including the maintenance of secure borders, can be achieved without unnecessarily championing cynical bilateral relationships over multilateral engagement.

Cutting a deal with Cambodia, one of the poorest nations in our neighbourhood, only serves to damage our reputation abroad.

Government's Medibank Private sales pitch

Investors can now pre-register for shares in Australia's biggest health insurer, Medibank Private.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann announced the Federal Government would soon begin a national advertising campaign to promote the pre-registration process of the share offer which could generate up to $4 billion.

He said those who pre-register can be allocated more shares than those who do not; while eligible policy holders who pre-register and apply for shares will receive a greater preferential share location.

"It's been long standing Coalition policy to sell Medibank Private. There is absolutely no good reason for the Federal Government to own a private health insurance business today," Senator Cormann said.

CSIRO's $120m Investigator can't plug into shore power

The CSIRO's new research vessel Investigator is unable to access shore power in Hobart and is running off the ship's engines.

The ship has been moved from its berth alongside the CSIRO to Macquarie Wharf following complaints by neighbours about the noise.

It is the latest in a string of issues with the $120-million flagship vessel, which was besieged by delays before eventually arriving at its home port of Hobart earlier this month, a year later than expected.
