Cambodia deal: another stain on our reputation

This is just the most recent chapter in the history of foreign policy misadventure that has occurred as a result of Australia's narrow approach to border security.

Australia's domestic interests, including the maintenance of secure borders, can be achieved without unnecessarily championing cynical bilateral relationships over multilateral engagement.

Cutting a deal with Cambodia, one of the poorest nations in our neighbourhood, only serves to damage our reputation abroad.

CSIRO's $120m Investigator can't plug into shore power

The CSIRO's new research vessel Investigator is unable to access shore power in Hobart and is running off the ship's engines.

The ship has been moved from its berth alongside the CSIRO to Macquarie Wharf following complaints by neighbours about the noise.

It is the latest in a string of issues with the $120-million flagship vessel, which was besieged by delays before eventually arriving at its home port of Hobart earlier this month, a year later than expected.

International human rights organisations have rounded on the Federal Government's deal to relocate refugees from Nauru to Cambodia.

The deal signed by Immigration Minister Scott Morrison in Cambodia on Friday will allow refugees to be sent from Nauru to Cambodia to be resettled.

Mr Morrison says under the deal Australian will help refugees to "re-establish their lives free from persecution".

However, Amnesty International called it "a new low in Australia's deplorable and inhumane treatment of asylum seekers" and the UN refugee agency UNHCR says it is "deeply concerned" by the deal.
