British parliament approves air strikes against IS militants in Iraq

Britain's parliament has approved air strikes against Islamic State (IS) insurgents in Iraq, paving the way for the Royal Air Force to join US-led military action with immediate effect.

Six Cyprus-based Tornado GR4 fighter-bombers were on standby to take part in initial sorties after prime minister David Cameron recalled parliament from recess to back military action following a formal request from the Iraqi government.

Mr Cameron said a small number of service people could also be sent to Iraq to guide air strikes and possibly train Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces battling IS militants.

Cambodia deal: another stain on our reputation

This is just the most recent chapter in the history of foreign policy misadventure that has occurred as a result of Australia's narrow approach to border security.

Australia's domestic interests, including the maintenance of secure borders, can be achieved without unnecessarily championing cynical bilateral relationships over multilateral engagement.

Cutting a deal with Cambodia, one of the poorest nations in our neighbourhood, only serves to damage our reputation abroad.

UNHCR condemns Cambodia refugee deal

International human rights organisations have rounded on the Federal Government's deal to relocate refugees from Nauru to Cambodia.

The deal signed by Immigration Minister Scott Morrison in Cambodia on Friday will allow refugees to be sent from Nauru to Cambodia to be resettled.

Mr Morrison says under the deal Australian will help refugees to "re-establish their lives free from persecution".

However, Amnesty International called it "a new low in Australia's deplorable and inhumane treatment of asylum seekers" and the UN refugee agency UNHCR says it is "deeply concerned" by the deal.
