Military 'stretched' with deployment to join international IS fight

The Australian military will be stretched by the decision to join the US-led operation against Islamic State (IS) militants, defence experts say.

Australian fighter jets and about 600 military personnel, including special forces soldiers, will soon head to the Middle East, with a total of about 1,800 personnel in the rotation cycle.

"You might think that's not that many but ... that leaves very little room for any other contingencies," former Army officer John Blaxland said.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott insisted a final decision to commit to combat was yet to be made.

Friendship and war: Abbott should tread carefully

By joining the campaign against Islamic State, Tony Abbott aims not only to nurture our relationship with the US, but also strengthen the only card he has left to play on the domestic front - the protection of national security.

'Remarkable' drop in oil demand slashes prices

The International Energy Agency says a sudden drop in the global demand for oil is "nothing short of remarkable".

The Paris-based IEA says its global demand forecast has been "revised down sharply" in the past month as oil prices on futures markets continue to tumble.

"A pronounced slowdown in demand growth in the second quarter of 2014 and a weaker outlook for Europe and China underpin the downward revisions," the IEA found in its highly influential monthly Oil Market Report.

This week the price of Brent futures fell below $US100 per barrel for the first time in more than a year, while West Texas Intermediate crude is trading around $US91 per barrel.
