Troops head to Middle East on $500m mission against 'death cult'

Australian troops have begun heading to the Middle East as Australia embarks on a military mission against Islamic State terrorists that is likely to cost about $500 million per year.

RAAF fighter jets and about 600 troops and support staff, including special forces soldiers, will be based in the United Arab Emirates on standby for action in Iraq.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said some personnel were already on their way, and more would follow in the next four to five days.

"We're fighting the terrorists of the ISIL death cult," Mr Abbott said. "I think strictly speaking it's best described as a mission, rather than a war."

Liberal MP flags tougher foreign buyer rules, Treasurer denies bubble

The Liberal chair of a parliamentary committee has flagged tougher enforcement of rules limiting foreign real estate investment, as the Treasurer welcomed overseas buyers of new dwellings.

Kelly O'Dwyer says there has been a "failure of leadership" in the Foreign Investment Review Board that has allowed overseas buyers to skirt a prohibition on buying existing properties.

At the same time, both she and the Treasurer Joe Hockey say foreign buyers have an important role to play in funding the development of new dwellings.

Mr Hockey argues it is "lazy analysis" to say Australia has a housing bubble, as it is a lack of new home supply driving up prices.
