Kidnappers free US journalist as Britain closes in on 'Jihadi John'

Kidnappers in Syria have freed a US journalist missing since 2012, as authorities say they are closing in on the Islamic State militant who executed reporter James Foley last week.

Peter Theo Curtis, who was abducted while in Antakya, Turkey, was turned over to a UN official in Syria after efforts by Qatar to win his freedom.

There are grave concerns for journalists being held captive in the region after video emerged last week of Foley, who was also captured in 2012, being beheaded.

Britain's ambassador to the US has told American media that intelligence officials were "close" to identifying the suspect in Foley's killing, dubbed 'Jihadi John'.
