Australian Air Force planes to carry weapons into Iraq: Abbott

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced Australian Air Force planes will carry weapons into Iraq to help Kurdish fighters battle Islamic State (IS) militants.

The announcement comes as local forces push to free civilians trapped in the besieged town of Amerli which has been surrounded by IS fighters for two months.

Mr Abbott is today expected to reveal the details of Australia's involvement as part of a multi-national effort.

It is believed C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster aircraft based in Dubai will be used to fly munitions and arms into the country's north to help Iraqis in the fight against IS. The first mission could be made within days.

We must heed Kissinger's prophecy

With Russian troops now in Ukraine, we need to be thinking more about history and what it can teach us, not less.

The logic of former US secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, suggests that instead of promoting a return to equilibrium, NATO's latest moves will merely confirm its nefarious purposes in Russian eyes.

This would be a notably short-sighted way to handle foreign relations.

Hundreds of foreign tanks in Ukraine: Poroshenko

Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko says there are now thousands of foreign troops and hundreds of tanks in the country, as the European Union warns a "new Cold War" with Russia would be detrimental to all Europe.

Mr Poroshenko, who is in Brussels to discuss the ongoing crisis with EU leaders, said his country is now the subject of foreign military aggression and terrorism.

"Thousands of the foreign troops and hundreds of foreign tanks [are] now on the territory of Ukraine," he said.

European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said Ukraine was on the verge of a full-scale war as tougher sanctions against Russia were being considered.
