Former Sri Lankan military officer the acting manager of Manus Is

Human rights and asylum seeker advocates are condemning a decision to employ a former Sri Lankan military officer as acting manager of the Manus Island detention camp.

The ABC has confirmed that Dinesh Perera has been running the facility for the G4S security company.

Emily Howie from the Human Rights Law centre says it its "completely inappropriate" for him to be in charge of "the welfare and well-being of vulnerable asylum seekers, including Tamils".

Activists say there are now about 30 ethnic Tamil Sri Lankan asylum seekers being detained at the camp, out of a total of about 1,300.

The morality of Manus Is can no longer be avoided

Morality seldom intrudes on realpolitik; rather, toughness is seen as a positive virtue, and mercy and compassion as weakness to be avoided at all costs.

But the death of one man and the injuries to scores of others on Manus Island mean that the unintended consequences of Australia's asylum seeker policies can no longer be ignored.

The Abbott Government can bluster all it likes about not succumbing to pressure and moral blackmail, but we are no longer talking theoretical abstracts and hypothetical outcomes, but actual events.

Scepticism high on first-time G20 growth target

The Group of 20 finance ministers has agreed to an ambitious target for global economic growth at the urging of Treasurer Joe Hockey.

Lifting global growth by 2 percentage points from its current forecast levels over five years would add $2 trillion to global economic output.

G20 members have agreed to take 'concrete steps' to make it happen - with policies to improve investment and to enhance trade.

However, analysts and commentators are sceptical that the target will be met as finance ministers return home and confront domestic political realities.
