The ABC has confirmed that Dinesh Perera has been running the facility for the G4S security company. Emily Howie from the Human Rights Law centre says it its "completely inappropriate" for him to be in charge of "the welfare and well-being of vulnerable asylum seekers, including Tamils". Activists say there are now about 30 ethnic Tamil Sri Lankan asylum seekers being detained at the camp, out of a total of about 1,300. But the death of one man and the injuries to scores of others on Manus Island mean that the unintended consequences of Australia's asylum seeker policies can no longer be ignored.
