United States president Barack Obama has issued a warning to Russia that "there will be costs" for any military intervention in neighbouring Ukraine. Acting Ukrainian president Oleksander Turchinov has accused Russia of deploying troops to Crimea in an attempt to provoke conflict and urged Russian president Vladimir Putin to stop "provocations". The comments follow the new interim government's claims Russian forces staged an "armed invasion" in the Crimea region, blocking a military air base and entering an airport on the Black Sea peninsula. Mr Obama told reporters in Washington he was "deeply concerned" by reports of Russian military movements inside Ukraine.
