Ukraine president strikes deal with opposition in bid to end bloodshed

Ukraine's embattled president has offered concessions as part of a deal struck with the opposition in a bid to end a bloody crisis that has left scores of people dead.

At least 75 people have been killed in violent protests in the capital Kiev this week, marking the bloodiest few days of Ukraine's 22-year post-Soviet history.

President Viktor Yanukovych and three opposition leaders signed the European Union-brokered agreement in the Blue Hall of the presidential palace.

The deal calls for presidential elections by December, the formation of a national unity government and constitutional changes to reduce the president's powers.

But not all demonstrators in Kiev's Independence Square are happy, as the president did not bow to their main demand - that he quit.
