British soldier Lee Rigby's killers jailed for life

Two British Muslim converts have been sentenced to life in prison for hacking soldier Lee Rigby to death on a London street in broad daylight in May last year.

Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael Adebowale, 22, were convicted by a jury in December of murdering the off-duty soldier - a 25-year-old Afghan war veteran - in Woolwich, south-east London.

Adebolajo received a whole-life term while Adebowale was told he would serve a minimum period of 45 years.

They were sentenced in absentia after being dragged shouting and struggling down to the cells after trying to stand up and shout when the judge said their actions in murdering Rigby were a betrayal of Islam.

After the sentencing, Rigby's family issued a short statement saying: "We feel satisfied that justice has been served for Lee."

Where is the alternative to Manus Island cruelty?

Rather than sit all but mute in the face of the Manus Island tragedy, an opposition with any quickness of wit might explore options, advance thoughtful policy proposals.

For instance, it might seek to explore the balance being struck now between maritime interdiction - turnbacks and the like - and the deterrent effect of offshore processing.

Instead, the political attack has been so subtle, so accommodating, that the Government has felt confident giving even more exposure to Scott Morrison, a man who by all the routine standards of parliamentary contest ought to be ducking for cover.
