Thai army seizes power in coup to restore 'peace'

Thailand's army chief has announced the military is taking control of the government, days after declaring martial law.

General Prayuth Chan-ocha made the announcement in a television broadcast after he held a meeting with all rival factions aimed at finding a solution to six months of anti-government protests.

Twenty-eight people have been killed and 700 injured since the power struggle between former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the royalist elite flared up late last year.
