Abbott and Pyne cancel Deakin University visit as students plan protests

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has cancelled a planned trip to Victoria's Deakin University due to security concerns as students prepare for a day of nationwide protests.

Mr Abbott and Education Minister Christopher Pyne had been scheduled to attend the official opening of a carbon fibre research facility at the university in Geelong today, but the trip was cancelled late yesterday.

The National Union of Students has called for a day of protest action today over federal budget cuts and rising student fees.

Don't flock to New Zealand just yet
