Government MP speaks out against 'broken promise' on fuel tax rise

A Federal Government MP has spoken out against plans to raise the fuel excise, warning it will force up the cost of everyday groceries.

The ABC has confirmed that millions of motorists are set to pay more for petrol when indexation rules are changed in next week's budget, in a move labelled a 'back-door carbon tax" by the AAA.

LNP MP Ken O'Dowd says the move will put pressure on inflation. "It's another tax and I guess it could be a broken promise," he said.

Make a decision: am I a criminal or a good doctor?

The Victoria Police are "reopening the file" into the death of Steve Guest after I admitted last Monday week that I had provided him with the drug Nembutal.

If I were charged, I'd be asking the jury to decide whether I'm a criminal or a good doctor. I'm pretty confident about what a jury would think.

Alternatively, if police refuse to prosecute, they must be asked why. If a law is "honoured more in the breach than the observance", then it is a bad law and needs to be changed.

Keating calls for longevity levy to supplement super for elderly

Former prime minister Paul Keating is calling for an extra tax levy to supplement the superannuation income of people over 80.

Mr Keating says the existing compulsory superannuation system should have the capacity to cover people aged 60 to 80, but more is needed as Australians continue to live longer.

"We can't try and pretend that like a piece of Indian rubber, we can stretch the (super) accumulation from 65 to 95," he said. "There's not enough of it now and it can't go for 30 years."
