Manus Island riot report details deadly violence

A Salvation Army worker identified as allegedly leading a fatal attack on Iranian asylum seeker Reza Berati on Manus Island in February, is expected to be charged in Papua New Guinea.

The PNG national has been named in an official report into the riots which took place at the Manus Island detention centre between February 16 to 18 this year.

Mr Berati, 23, died in what the Government describes as a "disturbance" that saw another 60 asylum seekers injured, some seriously.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says the riots represented "terrible, tragic and [a] distressing series of incidents that involved serious and indeed a fatal act of violence".

Tax avoidance: why not name and shame?

The problem with Kerry Packer's attitude towards tax avoidance is that those who can't afford high-end tax advice end up footing the bill for the wealthy who can.

That is why it might be a good idea if the ATO published data on everyone's gross income and tax payments.

Thailand coup leader claims king's endorsement to lead

Thailand coup leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha says the country's king has formally endorsed his position as head of the military council that will run the country.

In a statement, he said the army would have no choice but to use force if political protests flared up again.

The military overthrew the government on Thursday after months of debilitating, and at times violent, confrontations between the populist government of former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the royalist establishment.

Almost 200 politically affiliated people have since been detained by the military including Ms Yingluck and many of her ministers, party officials and supporters.

Abolishing renewable energy target could cost billions

Financial news and data firm Bloomberg has warned that billions of dollars in investment and thousands of jobs could be lost if the renewable energy target is scrapped.

Australia's pledge to use renewable energy sources to produce 20 per cent of its power by 2020 is currently being reviewed by an expert panel, amidst arguments that it has pushed up electricity prices.

However, the Bloomberg report argues that renewables are actually placed to put downward pressure on electricity prices.

It also warns that the current uncertainty over renewable energy policy is already seeing investment delayed or cancelled.
