Hollywood director's son confirmed as Santa Barbara gunman

Police have identified the gunman that carried out a series of shootings in California that left six people dead as Elliot Rodger, the son of a Hollywood film director.

Sheriff Bill Brown said Rodger, the son of The Hunger Games second unit director Peter Rodger, killed three people in his apartment before shooting dead three people in college town Isla Vista.

No one blameless as Thailand faces civil unrest

While the current coup in Thailand can still be described as bloodless, the risk of an explosion of serious civil unrest is now extreme.

Both political sides are to blame for this outcome. The Shinawatra-backed Pheu Thai party has remained beholden to the tainted influence of the exiled former prime minister Thaksin. Its opponents, rather than respecting voters, have continued to rely on the military for forced and false victories.

Labor won't stand in the way of debt levy, Wong confirms

Labor says it will not block the Government's proposed debt levy for those earning more than $180,000 a year.

The Opposition's Senate Leader, Penny Wong, told the ABC's Insiders program that the Opposition would "not stand in the way of that levy".

However, Senator Wong said Labor remained firmly against changes to welfare and Medicare, and would not negotiate with the Coalition on its plans to deregulate education.
