Coalition asks AFP for protest security probe

The Federal Opposition says it is "suspicious of a cover-up" of events leading up to the angry protest on Australia Day and has written to the AFP Commissioner asking for a thorough investigation.

Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott had to flee a Canberra restaurant on Thursday after it was surrounded by a crowd of angry demonstrators.

Late on Friday Ms Gillard's media adviser, Tony Hodges, resigned after it was revealed he helped tip off the protesters about Mr Abbott's location.
