Journalism has failed when name-calling is news

"Trivial and stupid" is the only way to describe the breathless reporting in the media this week of political word association games played in focus groups.

While it may be a bit of fun hearing Tony Abbott described as "unimpressive and blokey", or Bill Shorten as "tacky and fake", this tawdry exercise dumbed our politics down that little bit further, trivialising for the sake of titillation.

Instead of taking Shorten and Abbott to task for using slogans and treating the voting public as mugs, the media too often gleefully jumps on the bandwagon.
