Tony Abbott refuses to deny reports Australian officials have paid thousands of dollars to people smugglers to get them to sail asylum boats back to Indonesia, saying the Government will stop the boats "by hook or by crook".

If the Coalition are genuine in their judgment of people smugglers as "the scum of the earth", it would be a very strange thing to do business with them.

Yet an interview with the Prime Minister appears to have confirmed that his Government has indeed paid people smugglers to return their customers to Indonesia.

This casts doubt not only on the Government's own integrity but also on the sincerity of its arguments for "stopping the boats".
